8 Ball Pool Rules: Let’s Break It Down

We play by WPA rules here, with a few friendly twists. Here’s how it works:

When we start the game, we’ll assign solids and stripes to players based on the first ball they pot after the break. The player who pots that ball gets that type assigned to them.

If you pot one or more of your own balls on your turn, or if you pot a ball on the break, you get another shot - as long as you didn’t commit a foul.

But watch out for these common fouls, which will give your opponent a free shot:

  • Potting the cue ball
  • Missing a ball with the cue ball
  • Hitting your opponent’s ball instead of one of your own
  • Failing to pocket a ball or strike the table after hitting one of your own

And if you pot your ball and an opponent’s ball on the same turn, play passes to your opponent.

The goal is to pot all of your solid or striped balls, then the black 8 ball to win. Just be careful not to pot the 8 ball before your other balls, or you’ll lose the game! And if you commit a foul when shooting for the 8 ball, you’ll lose the game unless you pot both the cue ball and 8 ball with your shot.
